The Circle of Five

I’ve always valued my closest relationships and have taught my children the ‘Circle of 5’. That is, have 5 friends that would drive 500 miles at 5 in the morning to give you $500 – no questions asked. But there’s a catch.

The circle cannot contain a member of your family. The circle members must care enough to tell you when you’re doing something wrong, not living up to your potential or getting a little off kilter. There are no boundaries when it comes to keeping me on track. I chose my circle to help me accomplish my life goals. And sometimes that means tough conversations.
My circle is diverse. They include:
A former CEO and the best business talent I’ve ever known.
A former CEO who’s provided decades of support to ‘go out on your own’.
A Veteran who has taught me the cost of freedom.
A CPA who exemplifies caring and extended his family to help others.
My best friend for life who shaped my character and saved my butt on many occasions.
Each day I interact with many people – family, clients, colleagues and complete strangers – either direct or through the many forms of communication at my fingertips. My sharing of the circle concept has begun to shape the lives of those I know in a positive way.
Circles don’t last forever. Time marches on and at some point, I will not have all my members. But their lessons will last my entire life. And one never knows what can happen when a small, positive interaction influences the right person.
My favorite quote is “A teacher affects eternity, for he never knows where his influence stops”, by Henry Adams. Each day, spread positive lessons, make memories and let your circle know that you are grateful for their time - and more importantly, that it’s made a difference.
